Proper Care For The Evergreen Shrub

Defined Tag:

No shrub requires more varied care than the evergreen shrub. Why? It's because there are many species of this shrub type, and each species comes in different shapes and sizes. The pruning methods for one species, for example, will naturally be different than that necessitated by another, given their varying dimensions.

Analyzing The Different Species Of The Evergreen Shrub

We can classify these species into three basic groups: the small shrubs, the medium shrubs, and the large shrubs.

Of the smaller group belong lavenders and heathers, two very popular garden shrubs that are often lined beneath windows to give the house an organic feel.

Of the medium-sized group belong Berberis Darwinii, Viburnum Tinus and Choisya. These shrubs likewise enjoy much fame, given the beautiful flowers they are capable of producing. However, such a fact demands a different kind of pruning and trimming strategy for this class.

Of the larger-sized group, the most popular species would have to be the rhododendron. Since this type is expected to grow big, it is often placed in areas where its growth will be promoted. Hence, owners of this shrub find little need to prune the same, since its size, more often than not, have already been factored in the equation.

Pruning And Trimming Methods For The Evergreen Shrub

Smaller shrubs of the evergreen family only demand annual pruning, since they don't really grow that fast. Trimming, on the other hand, should be done during the colder months when the growth of the leaves and the stems are slow. During summer, these stems and leaves grow at a frantic pace, and trimming will just curtail their healthy, natural development.

Medium-sized shrubs, on the other hand, should likewise be trimmed during the months heralding the coming of winter, for the same reason as above. But pruning should be resorted to only after their flowers have withered.

Larger-sized shrubs only require little maintenance, mainly by way of removing decaying shoots that failed to endure the changing seasons.

The Wonderful, Wonderful Evergreen Shrub

Thankfully, evergreens are hardier than your usual shrubs, regardless of species. They can withstand constant trimming and pruning, and their growth will seldom be impeded by these maintenance processes, for as long as they are timed and carried out properly.

Evergreens are also cold-resistant. They will suffer minimal damage, even in the face of biting cold. This makes them the ideal all-around shrubs for many lawns and gardens.
