Just as the house is planned for use and enjoyment by the family and friends, so the development of the backyard should provide equal opportunity for family satisfaction.
Each room in the house was designed and equipped for given purpose. These rooms are separated by walls, with doorways to provide movement from one room to another. The outside walls of the home and those within the house and like counterpart in the border planting which enclose the backyard and those which separate the outdoor use areas, opening large and small provide access from one room to the other.
There are several similarities between the inside room and the outside room. As the weather warms in the spring, the family interests and living are transferred to the outdoors. For example, guests may be taken to the deck or patio instead of the living room. Family members enjoy being out on the deck, reading, sunny or indulging in their favorite drink.
Children move from the computer and the TV to the sandbox and swing. Older children and adults go from the recreation room to the lawn for badminton, play catch, maybe a small golf green or a hot tub-pool.
Eating every meal inside is transferred to the outdoors where the meal is prepared and served.
Most people work in a indoor room can find rest and relaxation in working with plants, fruits or vegetables.
All members of your family should contribute their ideas and interest as to what should be part of backyard landscape design. Also, consider the following items:
